Iterative Design of a Pal-V Flying Car Chassis with CAE

PAL-V is a completely new type of vehicle that is able to transform between helicopter and car. It is essential that the chassis is structurally sound and comfortable. For this purpose, a number of technical requirements have been specified. In addition to being light weight, the chassis must:

Support a 7 kN landing force with a safety factor of 1.5

Have an effective life of one billion rotations of the rotor blade

Have a fundamental frequency larger than 50 Hz

To meet these requirements, a chassis was designed in the Solidworks CAD software. The finite element method was then used to validate the structure and iterate its design.
